5 Tips for Preserving Your Hot Tub Cover
Looking after your hot tub cover is just as important as caring for the spa itself. A well-maintained hot tub cover not only helps to keep the hot tub water clean and prevent heat from escaping, but it will also help to prolong the lifespan of your hot tub. Spa covers are not cheap to replace, so investing your money and time into taking care of your hot tub cover now will save you money in the long run!
Here are our five most important tips to help you look after your hot tub cover and ensure it stays in good condition for years to come.
1. Do Not Stand, Sit or Place Heavy Objects on Your Hot Tub Cover
While your jacuzzi cover might feel sturdy and strong, your hot tub cover is not made to hold weight. Any heavy weight placed on top of your hot tub cover will put pressure on the shell and damage the hot tub covers structure. After all, most hot tub covers are made with EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) foam inners, which have great insulating properties but are not designed to support great weight. So, the next time you think about standing on your hot tub cover to cut the hedge or putting your garden tools on top of your cover, think again.
2. When Cleaning Your Spa Cover, Keep It Simple
You do not need to buy expensive hot tub cleaning products to maintain your hot tub covers. Just keep it simple with mild soap/soap flakes and warm water. Cleaning your hot tub every 1–3 months is essential for prolonging the life span of your hot tub cover. Regular cleaning will prevent the build-up of mould and mildew, as well as prevent the cover from cracking and deteriorating. If your cover is coated in a light soiling, simply wipe the cover with a damp soapy cloth. For more stubborn stains on the spa cover, use a soft brush with warm soapy water. It is that simple!
If you do wish to use cleaning products specifically made for hot tub covers, we recommend that you check with your spa cover supplier regarding specific hot tub cleaning products and protectants for your tub covers. The materials used for hot tub covers may vary and certain cleaning products could damage the hot tub cover coating.
3. Do Not Use Abrasive Cleaners or Materials
You might think that the stronger the detergent, the cleaner the tub cover, but that logic does not apply to spa covers. As mentioned in the previous point, keep it simple and stay away from harsh cleaners and materials. Harsh cleaners such as chemical cleaners, detergents, aerosol sprays and bleaches can cause fading or discolouration to your hot tub covers. Instead, use a mild soap to effectively clean your tub without causing any damage or discoloration. As well, avoid using abrasive materials on your cover, such as hard bristle brushes, as they will scratch or tear the vinyl cover.
4. Air Out Your Hot Tub Cover
While it is important to keep your hot tub cover on your tub to prevent bacteria and debris from infecting the hot tub water, it is also important to take your cover off every couple of weeks and let your cover fully dry out. This will allow the water vapour to disperse and prevent the build-up of mould and odours occurring in your hot tub.
5. Check Your Cover for Damage
If your hot tub is outside, your hot tub cover will be exposed to all the elements. Therefore, it is important to regularly inspect your tub covers for tears and damages and not ignore them, as they can impact the lifespan of your cover and tub.
